Rule 16(b) Preliminary Pretrial Conference

All new cases that are expected to proceed to trial will have a preliminary pretrial conference (pptc) scheduled approximately 30-60 days following the filing of the last appearance for a party. Counsel shall read and follow the directives contained in the Notice of Preliminary Pretrial Conference. A Report of the Parties' Planning Meeting shall be submitted no later than 5 business days prior to the pretrial conference. A sample Report of Parties' Planning Meeting is linked to this page. See FRCP 26(f). These preliminary pretrial conferences shall be held telephonically unless the court notifies otherwise. All counsel of record listed on the Court docket sheet will be contacted at the telephone number given of record. If counsel wish to be contacted at another telephone number (such as, for example, a cell phone number) the number shall be provided to Susan Brown at 219-852-6703 in advance of the conference call.

At the pptc counsel should be prepared to inform the Court of the nature of the case, report on the possibility of settlement and discuss the nature and length of discovery necessary to prepare the case for trial.

At the conference, deadlines (those submitted by the parties in their Report) are modified or approved by the Court. A trial date and final pretrial conference date will be scheduled in cases for which Magistrate Judge jurisdiction is consented. The deadlines will not be changed without good cause shown.

At the conclusion of the pptc, an Order Controlling Trial will be issued by the presiding Judge.
