Judge Robert L. Miller Jr. - Scheduling
Judge Robert L. Miller Jr.
325 Robert A. Grant Federal Building
204 South Main Street
South Bend, IN 46601
(574) 246-8080

The magistrate judge assigned to a criminal case conducts the initial appearance, arraignment, and detention hearings in all criminal cases assigned to Judge Miller and enters a scheduling order containing the deadlines for discovery and pretrial motions and setting the matter for trial before the district judge. The trial is generally scheduled thirty to sixty days from the date of the arraignment.

Judge Miller must schedule several trials each week, with criminal trials taking precedence over civil settings pursuant to the Speedy Trial Act. Judge Miller and his chambers strive to work with counsel to avoid wasted trial preparation, and Judge Miller ordinarily reaches every case on the date scheduled for trial.
