Free Attorney Training and CLE Opportunity: Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence Satellite Attorney Recruitment and Training Program

Thursday, July 6, 2023

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana will sponsor a virtual training session for attorneys on modest means/pro bono representation of victims of domestic violence in Indiana. This program will take place via Zoom video conferencing on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. C.D.T./10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. E.D.T. Please note the time and time zone of this event.

The Court’s participation in this training event results from the 2018 passage of the POWER Act, a federal law that requires District Courts to participate in at least one event each year that promotes “pro bono legal services as a way to empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, and to engage citizens in assisting those survivors.”

This year, our Court is again happy to partner with the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV). The attorney training program will be provided by ICADV’s Legal Counsel, Kerry Hyatt Bennett. The goal of the training program is to increase attorney awareness and participation in the ICADV Satellite Attorney Program, which provides representation to victims of domestic violence. Attorneys will gain the knowledge needed to provide civil legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence for a modest means hourly rate. Attorneys who participate in the Satellite Attorney Program are paid $75 per hour when they represent survivors. Opening remarks will be given by Chief Judge Jon E. DeGuilio.

Attendance for this event is limited to practicing attorneys in the State of Indiana. There is no cost to attend, and 1.5 hours of Indiana Continuing Legal Education credit has been approved.
