Free Attorney Training and CLE Opportunity

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, in partnership with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV), will sponsor a training session for attorneys on modest means/pro bono representation of victims of domestic violence in Indiana. This program will take place via Zoom video conferencing on Friday, September 18, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. C.D.T./10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. E.D.T. Please note the time and time zone of this event.

Opening remarks will be given by Chief Judge Jon E. DeGuilio, who will explain the history of the Pro bono Work to Empower and Represent Act of 2018 (POWER Act), discuss the importance of pro bono services in empowering survivors of domestic violence, and introduce the panelists.

Samantha Hickok and Annette Nickel will present on behalf of the Pokagon Band of Pottawatomi Indians, which is a sovereign nation that covers 4 counties in Southwest Michigan and 6 counties in Northern Indiana. Ms. Hickok works for the Pokagon Band as the Kids First Manager and has background in legal advocacy, case management, and building resiliency for Native American youth who have experienced domestic violence. Ms. Nickel is the Prosecutor/Presenting Officer for the Pokagon Band. They will give information about the Pokagon Band and the needs of tribal domestic violence survivors.

The attorney training program will be provided by ICADV’s Legal Counsel, Kerry Hyatt Bennett. The goal of the training program is to increase attorney awareness and participation in the ICADV Satellite Attorney Program, which provides representation to victims of domestic violence. Attorneys will gain the knowledge needed to provide civil legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence for a modest means hourly rate. Attorneys who participate in the ICADV’s Satellite Attorney program are paid $75 per hour when they represent survivors.

Attendance for this event is limited to practicing attorneys in the State of Indiana. There is no cost to attend and 2.0 hours of Continuing Legal Education credit have been approved.
