Henry Hurst Judicial Assistance Award

Monday, April 27, 2026

Congratulations to Sue Brown-Nickerson, this year’s recipient of the Indiana State Bar Association’s prestigious Henry Hurst Judicial Assistance Award!

Sue currently serves as the Courtroom Deputy Clerk and Case Manager to U.S. Magistrate Judge John E. Martin while also providing criminal duty coverage for U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew P. Rodovich.  Sue has also provided case management support for U.S. District Judge Theresa Lazar Springmann and U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul R. Cherry.  Overall, Sue has an impressive 31 years of exceptional federal judicial service!

Sue’s extensive experience and knowledge of court proceedings made her an excellent mentor to both chambers and clerk’s office staff. She willingly provided effective support and guidance to our new magistrate judge case managers within the district. In addition to being unbelievably generous with her time, her pleasant demeanor and “can-do” attitude make her a joy to work with. She is always communicating with law clerks and clerk’s office staff members throughout the district to ensure all judges are supported. Sue truly embodies the values that the Henry Hurst Award represents which include assisting the federal courts while promoting justice and efficiency within Indiana’s legal system.

Sue was presented with the Hurst Award in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 14, 2026.  Please join us in congratulating Sue!
