SOUTH BEND, Indiana (June 16, 2020): The United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana announces it is now under the leadership of a new chief judge. As of June 1, 2020, the Honorable Jon E. DeGuilio became responsible for handling administrative matters and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the court. The chief judge is assigned based on seniority and other factors, as set forth in 28 U.S.C. §136. Judge DeGuilio was appointed by President Barack Obama on May 13, 2010. He is a graduate of Valparaiso University School of Law (J.D., 1981) and the University of Notre Dame (B.A., 1977). Prior to his appointment as a federal district judge, Judge DeGuilio was Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Peoples Bank (1999 – 2010); appointed as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana (1993 – 1999); appointed as Prosecuting Attorney for Lake County (1989 - 1993); and had engaged in the private practice of law as well as serving part-time as a deputy prosecutor and public defender (1981 – 1989). Chief Judge DeGuilio replaces the Honorable Theresa L. Springmann who served from February 3, 2017 to May 31, 2020.
