A new scam is circulating via text messages instructing recipients to visit a Federal Court and resolve a traffic matter immediately.
If you received a text message regarding an unpaid traffic ticket or toll violation demanding immediate payment or a QR code scan, it is a scam. The District Court for the Northern District of Indiana does not send text messages to collect fines or list consequences.
What to know about this scam:
- Bogus Agencies: The messages often claim to be from the "Indiana Department of Vehicles." This agency does not exist; Indiana has the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
- Fake Threats: Scammers threaten immediate license suspension, vehicle registration holds, or an added "toll booth service fee" to panic you into clicking a link.
- What to Do: Do not click any links, scan QR codes, or reply. Delete the text and block the number immediately
